The special screening of “Loving Vincent”, said to be the world’s first fully painted feature film that looks into the life and death of Dutch artist Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890), kicked off at Cinematheque Passion yesterday.

The film, written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, won the Audience Award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2017, at which it earned a 10-minute standing ovation following the world premiere on June 13.

The biographical drama is based on a letter written by Van Gogh the week before his death. A total of 65,000 hand-crafted oil paintings on canvas make up the frames of the 90-minute film.
