A local man in his twenties is suspected of having killed his father with fruit knife in a flat in Areia Preta district early yesterday morning, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said in a statement.
The statement identified the victim as a 55-year-old surnamed Wong. No further details were released about the suspect, the victim and their family.
According to the statement, the suspect and the victim had a quarrel over family issues at around 3 a.m. yesterday in the flat in Man On Building in Rua da Tribuna. Two hours later, the son allegedly cut his father’s neck with a fruit knife. The suspect later called “999” and reported the incident himself.
The statement said that Wong was transferred to the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre for emergency treatment, where he was later pronounced dead.
As the suspect was thought by the police to be suffering from a mental disorder, he was also transferred to the public hospital to undergo a mental status examination. A Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said at yesterday’s regular press conference that the preliminary result of the examination showed no abnormality. The suspect has been detained. The spokesperson also said that the case was being investigated as homicide.
According to government-owned broadcaster TDM, Tang Yuk Wa, who heads the Family and Community Services Department of the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS), told reporters yesterday that his bureau was not aware of domestic violence in the victim’s family. However, Tang said that an application for financial assistance had been received from the family seven years ago. He did not say whether the application was approved by the bureau.
The police are investigating the case as suspected homicide, the first this year, according to the Judiciary Police (PJ).
The police recorded three homicides last year.
