Central District Community Service Consultative Council member Cheong Sok Leng said yesterday that as Macau has the “softest” penalties for drug trafficking compared with Hong Kong and the mainland, it has turned the city into a haven for drug dealers.

Cheong made the remarks during a regular meeting of the government-appointed council at the Patane Market Municipal Complex on the peninsula.

Chong noted that in recent years there have been cases in which Hong Kong residents came to Macau to sell drugs. Referring to data from the Secretariat for Security, she noted that there has been a rise in the number of Hong Kong residents taking drugs in Macau.
