A scooter rider stands in front of the main entrance to the Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co. Ltd greyhound racetrack last night. According to TDM-Radio Macau, the racetrack company handed its proposal on the relocation of the greyhounds to the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) yesterday, on the last day of a deadline given by the bureau. According to the Radio Macau report, the company chaired by legislator-cum-gaming executive Angela Leong On Kei and IACM official met about the fate of the greyhounds last week. It was then, according to the report, that the bureau told the company to submit its greyhound relocation plan by the end of May, considering that the racetrack in Fai Chi Kei district is slated to close for good on July 21, when its concession expires. The government has said it will take back the plot of land where greyhound races have taken place since the early 1960s. According to previous local media reports, the racetrack houses about 650 greyhounds. Local animal protection society ANIMA has offers to ship the greyhounds to a canine shelter in Portugal. Leong pledged earlier this week that she and her friends will take “good care” of the dogs. Photo: Iong Tat Choi
