Guest speakers and members of the audience at yesterday’s Macau Forum opposed the government’s proposal to significantly raise the fines for illegal parking and similar offences. They said that the government is ignoring the fact that residents are “forced” to park illegally due to the city’s insufficient number of parking spaces, particularly for scooters and motorcycles.

The weekly open-air debate is hosted by government-owned broadcaster TDM in Areia Preta Park every Sunday.

The Transport Bureau (DSAT) announced during a press conference last Tuesday that the government will launch a two-month public consultation on June 28 on the drafting of a bill amending the current Road Traffic Law, with the aim of combating traffic offences more effectively and thereby improving the city’s road safety.
