The Court of First Instance (TJB) yesterday ordered the local Chinese- language weekly Son Pou, its chief editor Lei Kong and director Chao Chong Peng to pay local developer Polytex a total of 50,000 patacas between them as indemnity for publishing “abusive” opinion articles concerning the ill-fated Pearl Horizon property development project. According to the court ruling, the articles had a negative impact on the honour and reputation of the company.

However, the defendants were acquitted of the crime of defamation, which the plaintiff claimed they had committed.

Polytex Import and Export Co. Ltd. had requested an indemnity of two million patacas for the allegedly defamatory articles.
