A 26-year-old local teacher lost HK$24,000 in an online scam after she was told by a “courier company” to pay a handling fee to collect a parcel sent by a “Polish man” whom she had met on a social networking site, PJ spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The victim finally realised that she had been cheated out of money after she was again told by the “courier company” the next day to pay a fine of HK$89,000 to collect the parcel as it contained a large sum of cash, Ho said.

According to Ho, the teacher met a man claiming to be from Poland on a social networking site early last month, and they started a chat. They also exchanged phone numbers and kept chatting on WhatsApp.
