A man from the mainland cheated a female gambler out of HK$295,000 by claiming to be able to provide her with non-negotiable gaming chips worth HK$800,000 last week, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Chan identified the suspect as a 56-year-old surnamed He. The 37-year-old victim, whose surnamed was not given, is also from the mainland.

According to Chan, the victim was introduced to He by a friend last Friday. Later the same day they gambled together in a VIP room in a casino in the city centre, during which the suspect persuaded the victim to put HK$295,000 into a VIP room account in exchange for non-negotiable gaming chips worth HK$800,000, according to Chan.
