The 23rd edition of the Southeast Asia Food Carnival will take place at Rotunda de Carlos da Maia (colloquially known as “Three Lamps” roundabout) on October 26-29, the Association of Returned Overseas Chinese Macau announced yesterday in a press conference by four members of its organising committee, at the association’s headquarters on Rua de Sacadura Cabral.
The four-day annual event, organised by the association in conjunction with the San Kio Residents’ Mutual Help Association, Macau Myanmar Overseas Chinese Association and Tai O District Residents’ Mutual Help Association, as well as the Association of Cambodia Overseas Chinese of Macau, will offer visitors a range of Southeast Asian cuisines, music and dance performances, as well as an art exhibition.
During the press conference, Lio Lai Keng, who chairs the organising committee, noted that the event’s opening ceremony will be held on October 28 at 8 p.m., to which government officials and consuls of various Southeast Asian countries in Macau will be invited to attend. She added that a photography exhibition showcasing the traditional costumes and scenic spots of Southeast Asian countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, will be set up from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily throughout the duration of the event.
According to a statement by the organiser, the carnival will include a “Gourmet Street” on its third and fourth day, to be held on Rua da Restauração next to the “Three Lamps” roundabout, where a total of 15 food stalls will be set up. He said that the association hoped to promote not only the food itself, but also the culinary heritage of Southeast Asia among local residents and tourists, as a means of supporting Macau’s tourism development and promoting its title as a “City of Gastronomy”.
Another representative of the organiser in the press conference said that on October 28 and 29, Rua da Restauração (the street connecting the “Three Lamps” roundabout and Estrada de Coelho do Amaral) and its adjacent section of the roundabout will be temporarily closed to traffic from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., in order to give room to the carnival. He added that from 9 a.m. on October 28 to 12 p.m. on October 29 parking will also be temporarily suspended in Rua da Restauração.
