A package-free shop called “Mai Lon Store” opened two days ago near São Lázaro district, selling legumes, rice, pastas and dried fruit served from glass storage jars or hoppers.

Consumers are encouraged to bring their own bottles when shopping there. The aim is to convince shoppers to use less plastic packaging, the shop owner told The Macau Post Daily yesterday.

The shop owner, Austin Sou Chon Kit, is keen to contribute to environmental protection. Sou said he got the idea of going plastic-free a few years ago when he volunteered for a Hac Sa Beach cleaning activity.

“I remember the pretty picture after we finished picking up the trash at Hac Sa Beach; however, the plastic trash had swamped the beach again when I volunteered for the same activity a month later…it seems like we did nothing at all”, Sou said.
