Cat cafés have been popular globally among travellers and youngsters in recent years. Two locals have put a twist to this trend by combining the café with a cat shelter, so that money earnt from the café could be poured in to save the city’s feline waifs, strays and abandoned.
This cat shelter café, “Catfee”, is co-owned by Michelle Cheung Pek Ieng and Agostinho Jesús Liu do Castro.
“We started this café to provide a shelter for stray cats, allow people to interact with them, and eventually break the usual perception of stray cats being ‘anti-human’,” Cheung told MPD Weekender during an interview at their shop located in Rua dos Cavaleiros near Camões Garden.
