Macau Customs Service Director-General Alex Vong Iao Lek admitted yesterday that the flower shop which was busted by the police last month for selling poppies had declared the importation of poppies in its flower import declaration document, but customs officers “overlooked” the details as the import declaration “involved a large number of documents”.

Vong made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a reception hosted by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Macau Garrison to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the PLA yesterday at the garrison’s Zape barracks. The army’s local garrison runs another barracks in Taipa.

The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced during a press conference on July 20 that they arrested a local man and a local woman, the co-owners of a flower shop in the city centre, on the previous day for selling poppies that they had bought online. PJ officers seized 50 poppies weighing a total of 3.78 kilogrammes in the flower shop.
