People always assume that Macau is the Las Vegas of the East and everything including Macau’s local cuisine should be sparkling, glamorous and extravagant but Sónia Palmer, who runs her 103-year-old mother’s long-established authentic Macanese restaurant, says that Macanese cuisine’s main characteristic is its “down-to-earth” flavours and features.
Macanese cuisine is unique to Macau, consisting of a blend of Cantonese, Portuguese, Malay and Indian cuisines. It is considered one of the world’s earliest examples of fusion cuisine.
Return to its roots
Down the street from Flora Garden, there stands the 40-year-old Macanese restaurant Riquexó which after many years of operation has finally returned to its roots where it first started.
