A wave of pessimism is affecting local jewellery retailers, Macau Goldsmith’s Guild Vice-President Lei Cheok Kuan told reporters yesterday, adding he did not expect any improvement before the end of this year.
Lei, who is also a vice-president of the Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations (Kai Fong), made the downbeat remarks on the sidelines of a forum hosted by the Macau Wisdom Convergence think tank in Iao Hon district where he was a guest speaker.
Lei said the sales of jewellery had declined considerably in recent months. According to Lei, customers in Hong Kong’s gold market are mainly from the mainland, India and Turkey, while Macau’s market is dominated by mainland consumers.
