The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested a local man on Monday for stripping down to his underpants after following an Indonesian maid out of a lift in Fai Chi Kei district, PSP spokesman Lam Keong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Lam, the 29-year-old suspect surnamed Wong told the police that he is unemployed. The victim is in her thirties. She told the police that she works as a domestic helper for a local family. Both the suspect and family live in the same building in Rua do Comandante João Belo in Fai Chi Kei district.
After the incident, the woman – whose surname was not released – called her female employer who then called the victim’s boyfriend who then called the police.
When the police arrived at the scene shortly after 7:45 a.m. on Monday to take her statement, the victim told them that when the incident happened at about 7:30 a.m. she was on her way to her employer’s flat, Lam said.
She added that when she entered the lift a man – Wong – was already inside. Suddenly, the lift malfunctioned and all the lights went out, the spokesman said.‘Don’t be scared, I’ll pay you’
The man then moved next to the victim, put his right arm around her shoulders and whispered, “Don’t be scared, I’ll pay you”. The victim was scared and as soon as the lift started working again about 15 minutes later, she pushed the “open” button, ran into the corridor and called her employer for help.
According to the spokesman, Wong followed her out of the lift and in the corridor stripped down to his underpants.
At about 7:45 a.m., the victim’s boyfriend arrived at the scene, collected his girlfriend and immediately called 999.
Thanks to the building’s CCTV camera footage, PSP officers identified Wong as the suspect, Lam said.
According to Lam, PSP officers nabbed Wong in his flat later that day.
According to Lam, Wong initially denied the crime. First he told the police that he took off his clothes as he felt hot. Later he told the police that the victim had asked him to take off his clothes.
Under further questioning, Wong finally admitted to the crimes of sexually harassment and indecent exposure.
Wong has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP). He faces arraignments on sexual harassment and indecent exposure charges.
