The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a local security guard on Wednesday for attempting to rob a local woman at knifepoint when she was about to deposit HK$10,000 into an ATM in Areia Preta district on Tuesday, PJ spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said in a special press conference yesterday.

In response to the man’s threatening behaviour, the woman in her twenties told the man, who was wearing a mask, that she had no money, after which the man “did not take any further action” so that the woman managed to escape from the scene and report the incident to the police, according to Lei.

Lei identified the suspect as a 54-year-old surnamed Ao who told the police that he works as a part-time security guard. The suspect told the police that he decided to rob someone as he needed cash to repay a gambling debt of about 30,000 to 40,000 patacas.
