Macau’s great development and changes over the past 20 years has demonstrated the vitality of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. Macau has made these achievements only because it has integrated its own development with that of the motherland, Edmund Ho Hau Wah, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), says.

ENJOYING ECONOMIC BOOM TOGETHER WITH MOTHERLAND

On December 20, 1999, Ho, standing under the regional and national flags, was sworn in as the first chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR). Macau returned to the embrace of the motherland, opening its new era of “One Country, Two Systems” and “Macau people administering Macau” with a high degree of autonomy.

“Macau’s economy was not good at that time. Before the return to the motherland the financial crisis hit Asia. The unemployment rate was high in Macau and public security was also poor,” Ho told Xinhua in a recent ahead of the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland on Friday next week.
