A 16-year-old local teenager was caught on Wednesday driving under the influence (DUI) and without a licence after he crashed twice, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Choi Iok Kin said during a press conference yesterday.

The boy, surnamed Fong, attends a middle school in the peninsula’s northern district.

According to Choi, the police saw a young man riding a motorbike along Estrada de São Francisco during a routine patrol around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The teen hit and damaged the railing but left immediately after the accident, and then headed to Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues, during which the police repeatedly urged him to stop, but in vain.

The suspect crashed again and hit the kerb and flowerbed when he drove along Avenida do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues near the Orient Arch monument, and when the police caught him, he appeared to have sustained minor injuries but did not need to be taken to hospital. Instead he was taken to a Public Security Police (PSP) station for a breathalyser test.

The result of the test showed that his alcohol concentration was 0.61 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood, according to Choi.

Choi said that the boy admitted that he had been out with his friends in a restaurant in Nape on Tuesday evening, telling the police that he drank alcohol and borrowed the motorcycle from his friend to drive home.

According to Choi, the teen explained that when he drove along Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida he decided to return to his friends in the restaurant.

According to Choi, the teen said that he was not aware that the police were nearby when he had his first crash and did not know what to do. Therefore, according to the teen’s version of events, he continued to head back to the restaurant and it was only then – allegedly – that he heard the police calling him, which was when he crashed again.

The case was transferred to Public Prosecution Office (MP) on Wednesday for further investigation. The teen faces a penalty for a hit-and-run offence.

The Public Security Police have notified the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) about the case of follow-up action.

The age of criminal responsibility in Macau is 16.
