Macau-based Portuguese bank BNU said today that it has donated 100,000 patacas (US$12,500) to the Macau Red Cross in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic.
According to a BNU statement on Tuesday, the donation was handed by BNU executive directors Sam Tou and Ieong Kim Man to Macau Red Cross Central Council President Eddie Wong Yue-kai and Executive Council President Quin Va at the BNU headquarters on Monday.
The statement pointed out that the Red Cross movement has been active in Macau since 1920, providing humanitarian assistance to the city's underprivileged segment of civil society. It is an autonomous branch of the China Red Cross.
"BNU will pursue its social responsibility by supporting humanitarian organisations in the COVID-19 fight as well as implementing other measures that aim to help Macau individuals and SMEs [small- and medium-sized enterprises] in this tough period," the statement said.
Earlier this month, BNU donated 100,000 patacas each to Caritas Macau and the Holy House of Mercy.
BNU is fully owned by Portuguese state-owned savings bank CGD. BNU is one of Macau's two note-issuing banks, alongside the local branch of Bank of China (BOC).
