The Macau government announced yesterday the opening of the city’s 10th hotel designated for medical observation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 144-room Royal Dragon Hotel in Zape on the Macau peninsula.
According to a statement by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the Royal Dragon started operating as a quarantine hotel yesterday. According to the statement, “the government will continue to look for more hotels that can be converted into venues for medical observation.” The 10 “quarantine hotels” provide about 2,400 rooms, according to MGTO data.
The government has ordered mandatory 14-day quarantine for most arrivals. While locals’ stay at a quarantine hotel – including food and beverages – is borne by the government, non-locals are charged 5,600 patacas (US$700). The government pays the hotels for the quarantine service.
The statement pointed out that the designated hotels “are committed to social responsibility.”
The 3,000-room Venetian in Cotai is the city’s biggest single-building hotel. The 4,000-room Sheraton, which consists of two blocks, is Macau’s biggest hotel. Both hotels are owned by US gaming operator Sands.
According to the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC), Macau had 122 hotels and guesthouses with a total of 39,000 guestrooms at the end of January.
