A jobless man was arrested on Monday for stealing a drunken man’s belongings worth about 112,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said in a special press conference yesterday.

The 33-year-old local suspect surnamed Kam told the police that he is unemployed.

According to Leng, a man reported to the police on April 21 that his valuables had been stolen when he was drunk and sleeping on the roadside. The victim said he was drunk after visiting a karaoke bar in the city centre in the wee hours. When he regained consciousness, he discovered that his watch, diamond earrings, platinum necklace and training shoes had been stolen, with a total loss worth about 112,000 patacas. He took a taxi to his flat in the Praia do Manduco neighbourhood and reported the case to the police after he had sobered up later that day.

PJ officers scrutinised CCTV footage from the area and discovered that the victim got out of a taxi in Rua do Dr. Pedro José Lobo in Nam Van. He sat down on kerb to take a rest and fell asleep.

The suspect approached the victim and after checking that he had passed out, he dragged him into a nearby building. The suspect walked out of the building after about an hour, while the barefoot victim stumbled out of the building after another hour before taking a taxi to his home, according to Leng.

Leng said PJ officers were able to track down Kam on Monday in the city centre and put him under surveillance. They nabbed Kam in a fast-food restaurant on Monday afternoon.

Kam admitted that he had had “physical contact” with the victim, but refused to cooperate with the police. PJ officers seized Kam’s clothes and tote bag which he wore and carried while committing the crime. At the time of the press conference, the police were still looking for the stolen items.

Kam was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday for further investigation, facing an aggravated theft charge.
