A female non-resident worker was cheated out of 29,493 yuan (34,050 patacas) in an online scam early this month, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at a regular press conference on Monday.
According to Chan, the victim reported to the police on Sunday that she met a man online through a dating website on August 2. The man invited her to participate in an online gambling game on a website called in Chinese聯合金服 (“United Financial Asset Services”).
She deposited 29,493 yuan into the online game account and placed bets on “big-and-small” (known as “sic bo” in Cantonese) games.
Chan did not say whether she won or lost money.
The woman later asked to withdraw her money but to no avail. She suspected that she was being defrauded and reported the case to the police.
