A 61-year-old bus driver was arrested on Tuesday for stealing his colleague’s smartphone which she had left on a passenger seat of a bus, Public Security Police (PSP) Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The local suspect surnamed is Lao.

According to Wong, a 50-year-old female bus driver reported to the police on July 2 that she had lost her smartphone worth about 2,370 patacas on a bus.

She told the police that she parked the bus around noon on that day at a bus terminal in Avenida do Parque Industrial and took a rest in the passenger seat of the bus and took her smartphone with her.

Afterwards, she resumed work and more than an hour later remembered that she left her smartphone on the passenger seat. She went to look for it but it had vanished so she reported the case to the police.

Thanks to CCTV footage, PSP officers discovered that Lao had entered the bus and stolen the smartphone. Officers asked Lao to go to a police station for questioning on Tuesday afternoon. Lao admitted that he stole the smartphone out of greed but insisted he didn’t know that the smartphone belonged to his colleague. PSP officers found the stolen smartphone in Lao’s home, Wong said.

Lao was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Tuesday, facing a theft-by-finding charge, according to Wong.
