Macau's visitor arrivals on the first two days of the eight-day National Day Golden Week (October 1-2) fell by 87.2 percent year-on-year to 37,619, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) announced today.
Customarily, the National Day Golden Week runs from October 1 (National Day) until October 7.
However, as the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival also fell on October 1 this year, mainlanders are enjoying an 8-day public holiday this year.
On National Day Macau's number of visitor arrivals dropped by 88.5 percent to 15,503, while the number declined by 86.1 percent to 22,116 yesterday.
Mainlanders accounted for 94.3 percent of the total number of visitor arrivals during the two days. Only 2,136 visitors were from elsewhere.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign nationals without the right of abode here are barred from entering Macau. Mainlanders have been allowed back into Macau since September 23, but only on condition that they have tested negative for the novel coronavirus. Macau has special border entry rules for Taiwan and Hong Kong compatriots.
Government officials said earlier this week they expected only a gradual increase in visitor arrivals over the Golden Week holiday compared to the previous months.
