The Bavarian-style Oktoberfest that has become ever so popular in Macau over the years doesn’t seem to be happening this year but MGM is putting up an alternative where people can still enjoy German beer and food this month.

The original Oktoberfest in Munich, which traditionally takes place in September every year, has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

MGM introduced the southern German beer and cuisine to the city over 10 years ago and it has become a tradition itself among local residents.

MGM said in a statement yesterday that it is reinventing the traditional “Bierfest” (beer festival) experience with its “Cheers, Macau!” event, serving Paulaner beer and “German comfort foods” such as roasted pork knuckles, pretzels and cold cuts to pay homage to the Oktoberfest, the world’s largest “Volkfest” (“people’s festival”) that has been held in the Bavarian capital of Munich since 1810.

The Bierfest will take place at MGM Cotai’s Anytime café/restaurant every evening from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. from October 23 to November 1.

According to the statement, the event also celebrates this month’s traditional beer season, and so there will be a Happy Hour where people can enjoy as much Paulaner or Heineken as they can drink for 190 patacas from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every evening during the festival.

In addition, there are also discounts for Mlife Members, local residents, and the users of selected payment platforms.

The statement said that the whole “Cheers, Macau!” menu would be available on local food delivery service company Aomi’s app so that people can enjoy German beer and food wherever they are.

The Paulaner brewery was set up by friars in Munich in 1634. Paulaner ranks among the Top Ten of Germany’s best-selling beers among the country’s around 1,500 breweries.
