Population falls to 682,800 at end of Q3

Macau’s population at the end of the third quarter was down by 2,600 quarter-to-quarter to 682,800, due to a drop in the number of non-resident workers living here, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Macau’s female population stood at 363,800 at the end of September, accounting for 53.3 percent of the total.

Based on Macau’s total land area of 32.9 square kilometres at the end of the third quarter, the special administrative region’s population density stood at 20,753 per square kilometre, one of the highest in the world.

A total of 1,408 live births were delivered in the third quarter, a decrease of one birth quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totaled 747, resulting in a sex ratio at birth of 113.0, corresponding to 113.0 male babies per 100 female babies.

In the first three quarters of 2020, a total of 4,200 live births were recorded, down by 195 year-on-year.

Mortality increased by 39 quarter-to-quarter to 570 in the third quarter. The top three underlying causes of death were neoplasms, diseases of the circulatory system and diseases of the respiratory system.

In the first three quarters, mortality dropped by 94 year-on-year to 1,650.

In the third quarter, new arrivals from the Chinese mainland holding a one-way permit increased by 648 quarter-to-quarter to 1,034. Non-resident workers at the end of the third quarter went down by 4,730 to 181,697, while people granted the right of abode decreased by 17 to 202.

A total of 519 marriage registrations were recorded in the third quarter, down by 106 quarter-to-quarter. In the first three quarters, 1,865 cases of marriage registrations, down by 964 year-on-year.
