The government should tackle the issue of Cotai’s construction material landfill as it has been full for years, Lei Pui Lam, who heads the newly-established Macau Association for Chinese Ecological Development and Promotion, said yesterday.

Lei, an educator and Macau member of the National People’s Congress (NPC), spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the association’s founding ceremony at the Macau Science Centre in Nape, coinciding with World Environment Day (WED).

The landfill near the airport “basically” reached its full capacity in late 2013, when the site had already received a total of 18.6 million cubic metres of renovation and construction waste, and the figure had climbed to around 28.7 million cubic metres by the end of this year’s first quarter, Chinese-language newspaper Macao Daily News reported last month.
