A local man was arrested on Sunday for driving under the influence (DUI) and blocking traffic by sleeping in his car parked in the middle of the road, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old suspect surnamed Lei told the police that he is a businessman.
According to Cheong, a resident reported to the Public Security Police (PSP) at about 4 a.m. on Sunday that a car was parked in the middle of the road in Avenida de D. João IV, blocking the traffic. The resident called the police after the driver in the car blocking the road had failed to react to repeated honking.
According to Cheong, PSP officers arrived at the scene and discovered that Lei was fast asleep in the driver’s seat, even though the engine of the vehicle was running. Lei was awakened by repeated knocking on the car window by the officers who noticed that Lei reeked of alcohol and therefore conducted a breathalyser test on him. The test showed that Lei’s alcohol concentration was 3.37 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood, confirming the offence of driving under the influence.
Lei claimed that he had planned to find a driver after getting drunk earlier that night. He also claimed that he could not recall anything else and did not know why he was in the car parked in the middle of the road, according to Cheong.
Lei was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for one year, and banned from driving for one year and six months, according to Cheong.
