A man was arrested last Monday for falsely reporting three crimes about his ex-colleagues to the police on March 18 and March 21, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said at a regular press conference on Friday.

The 32-year-old local suspect surnamed Cheng, who is in his thirties, told the police that he is a businessman.

According to the spokesperson, a man reported to the police on March 21 that a female employee of a shop in a mall in Cotai was taking drugs and laundering money in a room where the shop’s employees could rest. The Public Security Police and the Judiciary Police (PJ) went to the shop to investigate but the police were unable to contact the man who had reported the case after arriving at the shop.

The spokesperson said that the person in charge of the shop told the police that the female employee purportedly involved in the reported case was off that day. The officers’ investigation at the scene and in the mall did not find any evidence of the woman’s alleged crimes. The police suspected the man had filed a false police report.

According to the spokesperson, the police later discovered that the man had filed two other police reports on March 18.

On that day, the man claimed that he had seen a male and a female employee taking drugs in the store room of a shop in a mall in Nape in the afternoon of that day.

He also claimed that he had seen a male and a female employee in another mall in Nape taking drugs earlier that day.

PSP officers later confirmed that Cheng had previously worked in the three shops and that he had resigned from each of them.

Cheng had arguments with several of his colleagues when he worked in the shops. The three cases Cheng had reported to the police were “inconsistent with the facts”, said the spokesperson.

Cheng had filed the three false police reports by phone.

PSP officers identified Cheng based on the information obtained from the three phone calls and arrested him at his home in Avenida do Coronel Mesquita near Kun Iam Temple last Monday. The officers seized the smartphone which Cheng had used to call the police, according to the spokesperson.

Cheng has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of filing false police reports.
