A woman from the mainland was arrested for shoplifting in a shop near the Barrier Gate this week, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, a sales assistant of the shop in Istmo de Ferreira do Amaral near Barrier Gate informed the police on Tuesday that they had caught a shoplifter red-handed earlier that day. PSP officers went to the shop to investigate.

The staff told the police they discovered that a woman had put some products into her shopping bag and was about to leave without paying for them. As she was about to leave the shop, the staff immediately stopped her and told her to open her bag. The staff found two boxes of facial masks, a packet of a food item and a packet of cottonwool worth more than 100 patacas in the bag. Under questioning, the female suspect, who is in her forties, admitted to shoplifting the items out of greed, the statement said.

The suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, according to the statement.
