A man in his twenties, suspected of having stabbed a couple yesterday morning in the New City Garden Estate in Toi San district, was taken to a police station for questioning yesterday afternoon, according to local Chinese-language media reports yesterday.
According to a message sent by the Public Security Police (PSP) yesterday morning, a fight occurred in a flat in Block 15 of the multi-building estate in which two people were injured by a person with a weapon. PSP officers rushed to the scene to investigate.
The media reported later that a stabbing occurred on the 18th floor of Block 15. Allegedly, someone had attacked a man and a woman with a knife. At about 2 p.m., the Judiciary Police took a man suspected to be the assailant who lives in Block 15 to a police station for questioning.
The Judiciary Police (PJ) told reporters at the scene that the suspect lives in the same building, but not on the 18th floor.
According to the media reports, the incident occurred at about 9 a.m. yesterday. A woman bleeding from apparent stab wounds was found by someone in the lobby of the building while a man, who was also bleeding from what appeared to be stab wounds, was found outside the building. There were blood stains in the lobby and the stairs of the building.
Firefighters told the media that the two victims are local residents living in the building. The 63-year-old man sustained stab wounds on the left side of his neck, while the 54-year-old woman suffered multiple stab wounds on both hands and the left side of her neck. Both were rushed to the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre. The female victim sustained serious injuries.
As the police believed that the suspect was still in the building at that time, they arrived at the scene with shields, while the firefighters set up a rescue air cushion outside the building. At about 11 a.m., a large number of PJ officers arrived at the scene to follow up, with negotiators. Residents of the building were not allowed to enter or leave the building at that time, according to the media reports.
The media later reported that the two victims are a couple. The man was discharged from hospital after treatment, while his wife was still in hospital after emergency surgery. She was conscious after the operation, the reports said.
The Judiciary Police are continuing their investigation into the case, according to the media reports.
