A painting exhibition entitled “Destruction of Humanity” (人性的泯滅) by Bissau-Guinean (幾內亞比紹) artist Ismael Hipólio Djata is being held at the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex next to Macau Tower as part of a string of activities in conjunction with the 13th Cultural Week of China-Portuguese-Speaking Countries.

The event is organised by the Permanent Secretariat to the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau). A series of exhibitions, themed “Lusophone Polychromies” (葡光十色), by artists from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor and Macau, is presented to the public between June and December at the complex.

According to the exhibition brochure, the event aims to show the public the great sociocultural problems that humanity is facing nowadays.

“Seeing this exhibition through the painter’s eyes is travelling through other worlds and realising that art has no borders, no races, no languages. It is a universal means of communication that allows us to feel the warmth of the lands and peoples and understand the message transmitted, with no need of translation or interpretation,” the brochure points out.

The brochure notes that that “the world shines through” Djata’s paintings, “illustrating the culture of the people of Guinea-Bissau”.

According to the brochure, Djata is an urban ambassador of UN-HABITAL (United Nations Human Settlements Programme – 聯合國人類住區規劃署大使). Djata is a writer, poet, plastic artist, illustrator. He graduated from Portugal’s University of Minho, majoring in Information Systems and Technology.

According to the brochure, Djata is one of Guinea-Bissau’s most renowned painters. He is a member of the Plastic Artists of Guinea-Bissau Association (Bissau-Arte). He set up “Irmãos Unidos Arts” (“United Brothers Arts”) with his brother. Djata has won a number of prizes.

The exhibition runs until Sunday at the complex in Rua Sul de Entre Lagos. Admission is free.

Due to the recent detection of another COVID-19 cluster, the venue has been temporarily closed. For enquiries, email culturalweek@gfce.gov.mo or visit https://semanacultural.forumchinaplp.org.mo/.
