A male non-resident worker from Vietnam was arrested last Saturday for hurting a Mong Ha Hill Municipal Park security guard in the garden earlier that day, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

The suspect in his twenties surnamed Hoang told the police that he works as a cleaner.

According to Lai, the security guard reported to the police last Saturday that he was attacked by a man in the park who held a knife to his neck. He told the police that he saw two men in the park early that day drinking, smoking “and talking noisily”.

Smoking in public parks is forbidden.

The guard said that he had told them to lower their voices and to stop smoking. One of the two men reacted angrily, pushing him onto a chair and taking out a folding knife that he held to the guard’s neck. When the other man tried to stop the attack, the guard took the opportunity to run away and then reported the case to the police. A red mark appeared on the victim’s neck after the attack, Lai said.

PSP officers scrutinised the park’s CCTV footage and identified Hoang as the suspect. The officers arrested him at his workplace later that day.

Hoang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of causing bodily harm, threatening a person and possession of a prohibited weapon, according to Lai.
