A local man surrendered to the police last Tuesday evening for bumping a female pedestrian while riding a motorcycle on the pavement earlier that day, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said at a press conference on Monday.

The 27-year-old suspect surnamed Chan told the police that he works as a takeaway delivery man.

According to Lam, the Public Security Police received a traffic accident report last Tuesday at 7 a.m. that a man riding a motorbike on the pavement in Rua do Canal Novo (涌河新街) in Areia Preta district bumped a local woman. PSP officers rushed to the scene and found the injured woman and the motorbike – but not the rider. The victim told the officers that she had been bumped by the biker who asked her to resolve the matter between themselves. However, she insisted on reporting the case to the police. The man then told her that he needed to go to the toilet, after which he vanished, leaving the motorbike behind.

Lam said that the victim was rushed to a hospital for treatment by the firefighters. PSP officers identified the motorbike’s owner and told him to report to a police station later that day. The owner told the police that he and his friend (Chan) had “siu yeh” (宵夜) – a late-night meal – in the wee hours that day at an eatery in Rua do Canal Novo, and when both left the place early in the morning, he had lent his motorbike to Chan. The officers contacted Chan who surrendered at 5:50 p.m. when he appeared at a police station. The officers gave Chan a breathalyser test which showed that his alcohol concentration was 0.38 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood.

The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). Chan faces a raft of charges such as evading responsibility, illegally riding the motorbike on the pavement and causing bodily harm, according to Lam.
