The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement yesterday that its Cheng Yu Tung College (CYTC) and Peking University’s (PKU) Yuan Pei College (YPC) co-organised an online exchange programme themed “A Journey through History” to enable students of both universities to learn about Chinese history and traditional culture.
Students of both universities, according to the statement, studied in pairs and joined various activities. Launched by both universities in 2015, eight to 10 outstanding undergraduate students from both universities’ colleges create peer groups and visit each other in a one-week study tour, enabling them to live, learn and experience the local culture together.
The statement noted that due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, the CYTC’s students visit to YPC was moved online. CYTC’s Interim Master Wong Seng Fat and YPC Master Li Meng gave opening speeches during the online opening ceremony.
Meanwhile, the statement added that CYTC Associate Master Gong Yingxue and YPC Associate Master joined the entire activity, while PKU’s School of Archaeology and Museology’s Associate Dean Zhang Jianwei gave two lectures on the history and culture of traditional Chinese architecture.
Moreover, PKU’s College of Urban and Environmental Sciences Prof Tang Xiaofeng gave a lecture on the urban history of Beijing. The students, the statement said, also watched the film Postmen In The Mountains with Prof Sun, “who shared his insights on the film based on the social characteristics of China in the early 80s”. Students, the statement noted, also took part in a seal carving lesson and played Chinese chess.
The statement pointed out that the exchange of ideas among students was the online activity’s highlight, with students offering opinions on topics such as “the restoration of historical architecture”. Students also presented what they learnt about Chinese history and culture during the one-week activity at the end, with 10 YPC students expected to join an online exchange activity organised by CYTC for a week next month.
