A Filipina domestic helper was arrested earlier this week for stealing bottles of expensive wine from her employer, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Chong said the suspect is a 42-year-old surnamed Lopez. Lopez has been working for the victim, her 47-year-old local employer, for four years.

According to Chong, on Monday a woman reported to the police that 12 bottles of wine worth 62,440 patacas were stolen by her domestic helper. Chong said that the police later intercepted Lopez in Taipa, after which she admitted “taking” seven bottles of wine from the victim’s home; she sold four for a total of 4,500 patacas, two were at the suspect’s flat and one has been consumed by the suspect. Chong said that the police later found the two bottles of wine in the suspect’s home.

Chong did not elaborate on the discrepancy in the number of bottles of wine the victim said had been stolen and the number the domestic helper said she had “taken” from her employer’s home.

Lopez was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Tuesday for further investigation, facing an aggravated theft charge.
