A female university student from the mainland reported to the police last week that she was cheated out of 102,550 yuan (118,180 patacas) in an online scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said at a regular press conference on Monday.
According to Chan, a netizen told the victim in an online messaging app on November 24 that a retail app was hiring people for “placing orders”. After downloading the app, its purported staff member told the victim about the details of placing an order which required an advance payment each time and promised a “commission” of between 160 yuan and 280 yuan per order in return.
The victim then deposited money into several mainland bank accounts provided by the “customer service”. She never received the “commission”, and instead was told later that she needed to transfer more money to the bank accounts to withdraw her money, which the victim did. The “staff member” kept coming up with excuses and asked her to deposit more and more. She finally became suspicious and reported a loss of 102,550 yuan to the police.
