The newly-appointed president of the Macau Civil Aviation Authority (AACM), Pun Wa Kin, said yesterday that the number of passenger flights at the local airport has now returned to around 50 percent of the level recorded in the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

Pun made the remarks while speaking to reporters after his swearing-in ceremony at the AACM office in Nape.

Pun’s one-year appointment as the AACM president started yesterday.

Pun was sworn in by Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosário during yesterday’s ceremony.

Pun said that the first priority of Macau’s civil aviation sector is to have the number of passenger flights return to the pre-pandemic level as soon as possible.

Pun pointed out that Macau had only one international passenger air route during the COVID-19 pandemic – Singapore. The number of international air routes has significantly recovered during the ongoing post-pandemic period which started early this year, Pun said.

Pun also said that currently 11 international passenger air routes serve Macau’s airport every day.

The number of passenger flights at the local airport has now returned to around 50 percent of the pre-pandemic level, Pun said, underlining that the civil aviation sector would need to time to fully recover.

Pun also said that the Macau Civil Aviation Authority has not received any applications from airlines to run passenger routes to new destinations, adding that the applications that have been submitted since early this year are about resuming passenger routes that served Macau’s airport before the COVID-19 pandemic.
