A man has been arrested for drunk driving along with his friend who attempted to shield him, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said in a regular press conference yesterday.
The two local suspects are a 29-year-old man surnamed Wong who works as a driver and his male friend, of the same age, who is a construction worker surnamed Ho.
The Public Security Police received a report on Saturday at 2 a.m. of a private car hitting a concrete barrier in a traffic accident in Estrada Marginal da Areia Preta. They found Wong and Ho, who were both reeking of alcohol, near the car. Ho and Wong’s blood alcohol concentration was found to be 2.55 grammes and 2.41 grammes respectively after being given breathalyser tests.
Ho told the police at the scene that he was the driver of the car, claiming that the two had planned to drive home after dinner nearby but accidentally hit the concrete barrier when they left.
Later, the police scrutinised CCTV footage of the scene and saw Wong getting out of the driver’s seat after the accident. Under further questioning, Ho admitted to shielding his friend and said that he was worried that the incident would affect Wong’s job as a driver, while Wong claimed that he was not the driver and refused to cooperate.
Both have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where Wong faces charges of drunk-driving and evading responsibility, while Ho faces a charge of aiding and abetting the perpetrator of an offence, according to Wong.
