Respiratory disease deaths rise 179 pct in Q1

Macau's number of deaths caused by diseases of the respiratory system rose by 179.0 percent to 491 in the first quarter of this year compared to the fourth quarter of last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

In the first three months, the top three underlying causes of death were diseases of the respiratory system, diseases of the circulatory system (262; down by 35.3 percent) and neoplasms (208; a drop of 30.0 percent).

According to a DSEC statement yesterday, Macau's population rose by 800 people quarter on quarter to 673,600 at the end of the first quarter, up by 0.1 percent.

Females accounted for 53.4 percent of the total population including residents, non-local students and non-resident workers (NRWs).

Based on its land area of 33.3 square kilometres, Macau's population density stood at 20,228 people per sq km in the first quarter, one of the world's highest.

Mortality rose by 3.1 percent to 1,214 at the end of March, according to provisional figures.

The number of live births dropped by 13.5 percent to 987 quarter on quarter.

The number of NRWs stood at 154,658, a year-on-quarter decrease of 0.2 percent. Mainland Chinese and Filipinos accounted for 69.7 percent and 15.7 percent of all NRWs respectively.
