In two separate cases, a non-resident worker (NRW) and a local woman have been arrested for stealing casino chips worth HK15,000 and a mobile phone worth 11,300 patacas respectively, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said at a regular press conference yesterday.
In the first case, the suspect is a construction worker surnamed Hong who is in his fifties.
According to Lam, the Public Security Police received a report from a Hong Kong male resident on April 1 that the day before he had left casino chips worth HK$15,000 in a taxi when he got out. The police then scrutinised both the taxi’s CCTV footage and the cameras around the area and identified Hong as the man who took the chips.
Hong was arrested on Sunday in Cotai. Under questioning, he confessed to stealing the casino chips and exchanging them for cash, which he subsequently spent.
In the second case, the suspect surnamed Choi is a 32-year-old housewife.
In that case, the police received a report from a male tourist on April 6 saying that he had left a smart phone worth 11,300 patacas on a bench near a bus stop at Taipa Ferry Terminal. He only realised it after getting on a bus and reported the case to the police.
According to Lam, the police soon identified Choi as the suspect and summoned her to a police station on June 21. Under questioning, she admitted to stealing the phone out of greed, and promised that she would hand the phone back to its rightful owner.
The two suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft-by-finding charges, Lam said.
