The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) said in a statement yesterday that “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023” is slated to be inaugurated on Friday at the Macau Museum of Art (MAM), which will also see the launch of the “Main Exhibition” and the “Invitational Exhibition by Local Artists”.

The statement noted that eight exhibition sections will be successively presented from July through October for the event namely the Main Exhibition, the Public Art Exhibition, the City Pavilion, the Special Exhibition, the Invitational Exhibition by Local Artists, the Local Curatorial Project, the Art Exhibition of Higher Education Institutions and the Collateral Exhibition.

The event, which again has Central Academy of Fine Arts Vice President Qiu Zhijie as the Chief Curator, features 30 art exhibitions across Macau, with over 200 artists from more than 20 countries and regions, according to the statement.  Its theme “The Statistics of Fortune” explores “scientific research and religious activities which have been inseparable from each other since ancient times, with a view to inspiring people to examine and think of the relationship between science and religion from a new perspective”.

The Main Exhibition is located on MAM’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors and has 118 artworks by 42 artists from Asia, Europe and the US the statement said.

The Invitational Exhibition by Local Artists, meanwhile, will be held at the “·ART Space” on the Macau Cultural Centre’s (CCM) first floor. It will feature new works by six local artists based on this year’s theme, according to the statement.

Moreover, the statement added that Qiu will host three lectures this week that will introduce participants to the “thoughts behind the curation process and the updates on the international art scene”.
