During the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Macau won a silver medal in the men’s wushu competition yesterday.

The silver medal was won by local “sanda” (散打) practitioner Cai Feilong who was defeated by his Iran opponent Yousef Sabriabibegloo in the men’s 75 kg Sanda finals.

Cai told the local Chinese media yesterday that he felt very happy winning the silver medal, as his goal for this year’s Asian Games was to be in the top three. However, Cai acknowledged that his opponent took advantage of his weaknesses during the match. He said that the judges’ scores were different to his own calculations. “I did not expect the score gap to widen so quickly thus resulting in my defeat,” he said.

Cai also thanked the government for subsidising his team’s training in Henan, and he also expressed gratitude to the national team, which made it possible for him to win the silver medal in the Games.

Wushu is the collective term for martial arts, while “sanda” (“free fighting”) is the official Chinese kickboxing full-contact combat sport, according to Wikipedia.

Macau’s athletes have so far won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
