Woman scammed out of 4.98 million yuan online by ‘Macau’ man

A woman from the mainland was cheated out of 4.98 million yuan by her online “boyfriend” who claimed to be a Macau resident, according to a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson at a press briefing yesterday.

According to the spokesperson, the woman moved from the mainland to Sydney in 2008. On July 3 this year, she became acquainted with a man via an online messaging service who claimed to be the manger of an entertainment company in Macau, and a cyber romance began.

On September 8, the man told the woman that the company he worked for was going to be taken over, and encouraged her to buy 10 shares and that she should earn 6.7 million patacas after the takeover, said the spokesperson, adding that the woman believed the man and transferred 1.2 million patacas into his bank account as directed.
