In view of the Yellow cold weather alert issued by the local observatory yesterday, the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) has opened its winter shelter in the E1 Bairro da Ilha Verde Building at 34 Rua Leste da Ilha Verde from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the next day, until the mercury rises again, according to an IAS statement yesterday.
Blankets, food and drinks will be provided for those seeking shelter from the cold, the statement added.
The bureau urged members of the public to pay close attention to the health conditions of senior citizens, of those living alone and all those who suffer from chronic diseases or are in frail health, and to take appropriate precautions against the cold weather.

The observatory predicted that the Yellow cold weather warning, which was issued yesterday, will remain in force at least during the upcoming few days. The weather station said that the mercury was expected to drop to 6°C or even below, tomorrow and on Wednesday.
