Northern District Community Service Consultative Council Committee Deputy Convener Kou Ngon Fong yesterday quoted a Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) official as saying that that the supply of “fresh chickens” to Macau had been stable and smooth for more than a month, with a daily average of 2,500 fresh chickens supplied to Macau.

Kou made the remarks during a press briefing after the government-appointed committee’s closed-door meeting with IAM officials and Nam Kwong Logistics Company Limited representatives at the Government Integrated Service Building in Areia Preta yesterday about Macau’s supply of frozen and fresh chicken.

Since February 2, fresh chickens have been supplied to the local markets daily within one-and-a-half hours after their slaughter and processing early in the morning from the suppliers in Zhuhai.

Kou quoted the IAM as saying that in the past, around 15,000 frozen chickens were supplied to Macau on a daily basis, but after the increase in the supply of fresh chickens, the daily number of frozen chickens had decreased by about 1,000, indicating that there was an increase in the market demand for fresh chickens.

Kou noted that the current price of fresh chickens is 20 to 30 percent higher than that of frozen chickens, with the highest price being 99 patacas per chicken.

Kou also quoted Nam Kwong Logistics Company Limited as saying that it will provide more fresh food and more fresh chickens according to the market, while the Municipal Affairs Bureau will provide the right conditions for related companies or suppliers to introduce more fresh food.

Committee member Kou Ka Lei said during yesterday’s press conference that IAM officers carry out regular inspections and spot checks to ensure that fresh chickens are sold within 24 hours, pointing out that no non-compliance had so far been detected.
