The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Chief Executive Election of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) has announced today the schedule for the 2024 election of the Chief Executive Election Committee members.

Based on the schedule, residents eligible to vote may register as candidates for the election committee from June 18 to July 2, while the list of committee members will be announced on August 19.
The date of the CE election will be announced by order of current Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng, according to the electoral affairs commission.

Song Man Lei, the commission's president, noted that the election of committee members will use electronic voting this year, expecting higher efficiency in the election procedure.

Macau's Official Gazette (BO) earlier this month published an executive order by Ho, setting August 11 as the election day for members of the chief executive election committee.

Ho's five-year term at the helm of the MSAR government ends on December 19 this year. Ho, 66, has still to announce whether he intends to run for a new five-year term.

According to Article 48 the MSAR Basic Law, the CE of the MSAR may serve for not more than two
consecutive terms.

Article 46 states that the CE shall be a Chinese citizen of not less than 40 years of age who is a permanent resident of the region and has ordinarily resided in Macau for a continuous period of not less than 20 years.

Article 45 says that the CE is the head of the MSAR which he or she represents.
