Two elderly local women were separately cheated last week out of a total of 70,000 patacas by a purported “grandson” in a “guess who I am” scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chan Wun Man said during a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Chan, the victims received calls on their fixed-line telephones at home last week respectively, mistakenly believing the scammers to be their “grandsons”.
Chan said that the scammers said that they had been arrested for attacking someone and asked the victims to hand over cash to a “lawyer” outside their home for compensation to the injured person.
The victims then followed the scammers’ instructions, withdrew the money and handed over 10,000 patacas and 60,000 patacas in cash respectively to the purported lawyer in Areia Preta.
According to Chan, the victims later talked to their family members only to find out that they had been scammed.
