The current “Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles” policy that allows Macau cars to travel to Guangdong now also covers cars owned by Macau non-Chinese permanent residents holding their travel permit to enter the mainland.

The “Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles” policy’s extended implementation started yesterday, which was announced by the Macau Transport Bureau (DSAT) in a statement on Friday.

The “Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles” policy, which got off the ground early last year, benefits Macau cars without a Guangdong-Macau dual licence plate. The policy is currently only implemented at the Macau-Zhuhai checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB).

Since July 10 this year, non-Chinese nationals who are permanent residents of Hong Kong and Macau have been able to apply for a travel permit to enter the mainland, officially known as Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Non-Chinese Citizens), on multiple trips for up to 90 days each time within a five-year validity period.

In general, the mainland travel permits held by Hong Kong and Macau Chinese nationals, colloquially known as Home Return Permits, do not have a limitation on the length of time they stay in the mainland each time.

Since the “Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles” policy started early last year, it had benefited cars owned by Macau Chinese-national residents holding a Home Return Permit, but from yesterday the policy was extended to cars owned by Macau non-Chinese permanent residents who have obtained their Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Non-Chinese Citizens).

The DSAT statement noted that application procedures for the “Northbound Travel for Macau Vehicles” policy from the new beneficiaries is similar to their Macau Chinese-national counterparts.
