Local artist Bianca Lei Sio-Chong is showcasing works for her latest exhibition “At the Crack of…” at the Taipa Village Art Space, which takes on the theme of “breaking”.
Lei, according to information about the artist displayed at the gallery, has showcased her works at different venues worldwide. She is a full-time lecturer at the Macao Polytechnic University’s (MPU) Centre of Sino-Western Cultural Studies and a programme curator at the Macao Ox Warehouse Art Space.
Her latest mixed-media exhibition, which is on until November 30, is site specific and uses the art space as more than just a place to display her work, with a recent statement from the Taipa Village Cultural Association noting that its architectural elements such as the walls and pavement are integrated into the exhibits.
The statement said that past and present scenes that have occurred in the art space are exhibited as graphics, photos and prints. These include cracks, marks and shadows on the walls and floor, “visual elements of the space that go unnoticed and are usually ignored”, the statement said. Installations are also among those showcased.
Elaborating on the theme, the statement quoted Lei as saying: “From encounters with people and things that have happened in recent years, the idea of ‘breaking’ has lingered more and more in my mind”.
Lei added: “From relatively abstract ideas to concrete scenes, I began to pay attention and observe – and even deliberately looked for – the ‘cracks’ that appeared around me. Although cracks can easily conjure up negative impressions of natural and man-made disasters, they can also convey a positive feeling of breakthrough and the arrival of new things.”
The free-admission gallery is open from 12 noon to 8 p.m. daily, while more details on both the exhibition and artist are available on
